We don't know that he hasn't set up DefIcons. It's possible that thew
file is being mis-recognised, seeing which icon DefIcons is picking will
tell which filetype it thinks they are.

Or just use datatypes. There's no need to work out your own file
recognition stuff when the OS already has a good system for doing so.

I suspect it may be the type of JPEG that's causing the problem, as
Krevin said they were digital camera pictures. These often use the
JFIF-EXIF format. EXIF = EXtended InFormation, my Nikon sores all sorts
of information in here, like exposre and zoom settings for each picture.
not all JPEG datatypes can handle this JPEG variant, the AK ones can.

Yup, but you still may as well use datatype recognition here.
